For our weekend bonus content, I wanted to highlight one of the most successful giant-killer clubs in the FA Cup, Sutton United.
Last year they made it to the Fifth Round of the FA Cup, putting them as one of the last 16 clubs, before losing to Arsenal. This is a team that clearly punches above it’s weight! The have also reached the highest level of competitive football in the clubs extensive history, so congratulations U’s!!
Sutton United Football Club
Nickname: The U’s
Team Colors: Amber/Chocolate Brown
Ground: Gander Green Lane (Knights Community Stadium)
Current League: (Vanarama) National League (Tier 5)
The club is currently enjoying their highest level of football in club history. They nearly were promoted to League 2 last year, barely falling short in the playoffs. The club has a storied history in not only the lower leagues but as a non-League side that manages to consistently beat League sides, they have 8 such wins to their credit.
In 1985 they had to refuse promotion from the Isthmian League to the Conference League because of issues with meeting stadium specifications required for Conference teams. After the second straight promotion, Sutton United was able to secure funds to do a large project to allow them to meet Conference Stadium requirements. After doing so, they finished comfortably mid-table in their first year.
To the sides credit they’ve obtained League Champion trophies for the National League South, Isthmian League Premier Division (5 times), and Athenian League (2 times). They’ve also won the Surrey Senior Cup (competed for by teams within Surrey) fifteen times.
This club has a namesake called Sutton United (Gambia) that plays in the Gambian third tier, according to Sutton United. The “partnership” was created when the side was supplied with kits in the Amber and chocolate of Sutton United.
Current League position:
9th (however, only 3 points separate places 1-9.)
Home – September 1st v. Halifax Town FC (@southport_fc) at Gander Green Lane
Away – September 4th v. Maidstone Utd (@chesterfc) at Gallagher Stadium
Sutton Utd will have their match drawn in October to compete in the 4th Qualifying round, we’ll keep you posted!
