With 16 matchups in the Europa League’s Round of 32, we simply couldn’t write about them all. We did write about eight of the most compelling matchups, either because one of the clubs is a favorite to make it all the way to Baku, or because both clubs have about an equal chance to reach the next round and a small chance to make it all the way themselves.
Here’s the list with links to previews of those eight matchups:
- Rapid Vienna v Inter Milan
- Krasnodar v Bayer 04 Leverkusen
- Zurich v Napoli
- Malmo v Chelsea
- Shakhtar Donetsk v Eintracht Frankfurt
- Celtic v Valencia
- Lazio v Sevilla
- BATE Borisov v Arsenal
As for the other eight matchups, here’s a brief look at each of those matches, including the favored club for the Round of 32 (according to FiveThirtyEight). Depending on how the first match goes this week, we may cover these eight matches a little more in depth next week.

This is the only matchup in the Round of 32 between clubs that came over from the Champions League after finishing third in their group. Galatasaray finished a distant third behind Porto and Schalke 04 in Group D, while Benfica couldn’t keep pace with Bayern Munich and Ajax in Group E. Both clubs have long odds to win the Europa League, with Benfica the best among the two at 4% (Galatasaray is at 2%).
Viktoria finished third in Group G of during the Champions League group stage behind Real Madrid and Roma and was transfered to Europa League after winning the head-to-head tiebreaker against CSKA Moscow. Dinamo Zagreb won Group D in the Europa League Group Stage. The clubs have a combined 3% chance of reaching the final.
Club Brugge finished third in Group A during the Champions League group stage behind Borussia Dortmund and Atlético Madrid. Red Bull Salzburg won Group B during the Europa League group stage, going 6-0-0 in the process. RB Salzburg has a 12% chance of reaching the final and a 6% chance of winning, making them the favorite among this group of clubs.
Sporting CP finished second behind Arsenal in Group E during the Europa League group stage. Villarreal won Group G over Rapid Vienna based on head-to-head tiebreaker. Villarreal has long odds to win the tournament, with only a 2% chance to do so.
The overall odds for the clubs here could be impacted by their draw, so we’ll have to see if there is a dramatic shift in anything after the first match in the round this week. If there are any upsets among this group (or the other eight), it could be quite the shake up. We’ll be keeping an eye on it all to see if anything changes before next week’s matches kick off on the 20th!
Until next time…
