Friday Night Spotlight – Aston Villa at West Brom

Friday Night Spotlight Today’s Friday Night Spotlight takes a bit of a turn due to all of college football being on break (except for Army v. Navy, cue foreboading music…) So we’ll be taking a trip across the big pond to catch up with West Bromwich Albion and Aston Villa as they embark on the … Read moreFriday Night Spotlight – Aston Villa at West Brom

(UPDATED) EFL Championship – Week 16 Slate

Championship Week 16 Fixtures/Results

The results from last week, when each club played twice, didn’t have the impact on the Power Rankings I was expecting, but it was still an exciting week nonetheless. This week doesn’t appear to be much different, with about half of the matches being hosted by a lower-ranked club this week. With the Championship being deemed the best league in England, nearly any team can find success week to week (sorry Ipswich Town supporters).

Per usual, the number in parenthesis before each club is where they fell on our Week 16 Power Rankings. Home clubs are listed first. We’ll keep this updated throughout the weekend, with winning indicated in bold, while matches that end in draws will have their clubs italicized.

Championship Wednesday – Aston Villa v Nottingham Forest

As mentioned in both the weekly Power Rankings and a look at the Week 15 slate, Championship clubs are playing twice this week. In the spirit of that, I will be highlighting a “Match of the Day” from three of the days with multiple matches.

Yesterday, we took a look at Preston North End and Middlesbrough, which ended in a 1-1 draw after Middlesbrough evened it up just after half time. So much for my predicted clean sheet. Boro dropped a spot into third place because of Leeds United’s victory over Reading, while Preston North End moved up a spot into 15th.

Today, it appears that the premier match of the day is Aston Villa playing host to Nottingham Forest. Forest currently has the upper hand on Villa, who is trying to finish in the playoff zone for the second consecutive season (followed by a return to the Premier League for the first time since 2015-2016. A return to the Premier League for Forest would be their first trip since the 1998-99 season.

Villa has won its last three matches – albeit after a short two match losing streak – while Forest is unbeaten in its last five (3-2-0). Will the clubs continue streaking, or will one prevail and walk away with the three points?

Let’s take a look at the clubs:

Championship Week 15 Fixtures/Results

After shaking off the international break cobwebs this past weekend, the clubs of the Championship will each be playing twice this week. Upon completion of the final match Monday night, all clubs will have played 20 matches on the season, and will reach the half way point the week before Christmas.

Per usual, the number in parenthesis before each club is where they fell on our Week 15 Power Rankings. In the past, when we have had two league matches in a week, we end up seeing a lot of movement in subsequent rankings, and this week’s slate features a lot of matches that could shake up the rankings (and league standings). We’ll profile a few of those matches during the week, and we’ll try to keep this page updated as results roll in, so feel free to check back in throughout the week.

Home clubs are listed first. Winning clubs will be indicated in bold, while matches that end in draws will have their clubs italicized.

EFL Championship – Week 14 Power Rankings

It’s been nine days since they last played in the Championship, so I’m sure I can speak for all fans of the league and say that I’m glad the international break is over! Play returns this week with action on Friday, but before we get to that, we need to update our Power Rankings from before the break.

If you missed these rankings last week, I hope you found our latest look at the promotion and relegation standings, which we published in lieu of these rankings. As always, the movement in the rankings here (hopefully) only reflects the action in the league.

EFL Championship Tuesday – Aston Villa v. Norwich

The championship so far this season is a very close race, and although Aston Villa enters this match as 13th-place in the standings, there are only 7 points between 13th and 1st. A win for Aston Villa would move them up to 5th place in the table (above Norwich based on goal differential), while Norwich currently reside in 5th place.

Aston Villa finished in 4th-place last year, while Norwich finished 14th.

Guest additions by EFL Stats & Tips:
Last times out for both teams:
Norwich picked up a 2-1 win away @ Nottingham Forest. Aston Villa got off to a winning start under new manager Dean Smith, beating Swansea at home 1-0.

Head to Head:
Norwich have won the last 3 at home; 3-1, 1-0, 2-0. (2-0 in premier league)
