EFL Championship – Week 27 Power Rankings

It’s going to be a wild couple of weeks in the Championship. Like last week, we’ll see Championship matches on four different days this week. But that’s what has to happen when some clubs have played 31 matches, others 32, and the remainder 33.

With some clubs playing twice last week, the change from last week’s Power Rankings are a little more dramatic than they were last week, including a new team at the top after a midweek loss by our former number one club.

As always, we try to keep the rankings confined to action played in the Championship; even though Swansea City and Millwall have advanced to the FA Cup quarterfinals, that won’t have bearing on this week’s rankings.

Championship Week 26 Fixtures/Results

This week will feature a lot of Championship clubs playing twice, while others will be taking a break from league play over the weekend to play their fifth round matches in the FA Cup, including one between Championship clubs Swansea City and Brentford. (The others playing in the FA Cup this weekend are Queens Park Rangers, Derby County, Millwall, and Bristol City).

As always, the numbers in parenthesis before the clubs is where they happen to fall in our weekly Power Rankings – which may not match where they fall on the league table. We’ll try to keep this post updated with results throughout the week, with the winning clubs in bold and draws indicated by italics. Home clubs are listed first.

Championship Week 25 Fixtures/Results

After a discombobulated past couple of weeks in the Championship slate due to FA Cup action, we have the second consecutive week of a fairly normal schedule… before it all gets thrown out of whack for the rest of February. Nevertheless, this week has a lot of quality matchups that could either settle the league table a bit – or throw it into further chaos.

EFL Championship – Week 23 Power Rankings

Oh boy…

The results from the Championship this week really scrambled up the rankings, with only seven clubs staying put from last week. We had a lot of lower-ranked teams knock of higher ranked ones. The clubs ranked 12th through 17th all won, while four of the top ten clubs lost, so this week is really just a huge mess all around. Hopefully things will sort themselves out over the next couple of weeks.

We also have a new number one club this week, though it is a return to the top for the club with the lowest average rank this season, with Middlesbrough claiming the mantle for the third time this season. But, knowing our luck with recently anointed top clubs, it will probably be someone completely different next week.

Championship Match of the Week – Aston Villa v Hull City

Our Championship Match of the Week features one of the hottest clubs across English football, as well as one of the clubs that have, until recently, been a mainstay in the Premier League.

Aston Villa, currently 12th in the Championship, will host Hull City, who have ridden a wave of success up the league table into 10th place. While these clubs aren’t necessarily competing for a spot in the playoff right this moment, their recent play has been emblematic of what can sometimes occur in the Championship up and down the table. Also, though they are barely in the top half of the league table, over in our weekly Power Rankings, they both rank a bit higher, with Villa checking in at 9th and Hull City 4th.

Let’s take a look at the clubs:

Championship Week 22 Fixtures/Results

This week’s Championship action sees a lot of matches between clubs with some room between them. Last time this happened, a lot of the lower-ranked clubs ended up prevailing, throwing our rankings into chaos. I would hope that this doesn’t happen again, but the Championship was been a strange beast all season.

Per usual, the number in parenthesis before each club is where they fell on our Week 22 Power Rankings. Home clubs are listed first, and will be hosting both matches on the week. We’ll keep this updated throughout the week, with winners indicated in bold, while matches that end in draws will have their clubs italicized.
