Alliance of American Football – Week 7 Preview

AAF Week 7 Schedule and Picks

It’s Week 7 in the Alliance!

Some questions we have entering this weekend’s action:

  • Will the Orlando Apollos clinch a playoff spot this weekend?
  • Can the Salt Lake Stallions knock off the first place San Antonio Commanders to keep their own slim playoff hopes alive?
  • Will the first weekend of spring get the crowds to the games?
  • Will we continue to have a pass-dominated league (greater than 65% of yards through the air?)
  • Can Johnny Manziel start and find success in his third professional football league?

With those questions and more, we are prepared to head down the homestretch of the season. With the playoffs just five weeks away, we could officially have a couple of the participants as soon as Saturday night depending on the results.

Alliance of American Football – Week 6 Leaders

AAF Stat Leaders

The Eastern Conference remains the Orlando Apollos’ conference to lose, though they only lead by one game after their first loss of the season (to the Arizona Hotshots) and the Birmingham Iron’s win against the San Diego Fleet. Nevertheless, a win for the Apollos (or a loss by the Memphis Express) this weekend would clinch a playoff berth for Steve Spurrier’s club.

The Western Conference still remains muddled, though the San Antonio Commanders return home for the first time in a month in sole possession of first place. They’ll play a Salt Lake Stallions team nursing long-shot playoff odds, while the other two conference teams will be fighting it out for second place.

Overall, the league remains a passing league, with last week’s offensive yardage split of 72% passing and 28% rushing. For the season, the split is about 65%/35%, so expect it to remain a passing league for the rest of the season, with a breakout rushing game every once in a while.

Let’s take a look at the individual categories:

Birmingham Iron v San Diego Fleet – Game Recap

After winning last week in a thrilling game on a last second field goal, the San Diego Fleet were hoping to remain undefeated in San Diego with a game against the struggling Birmingham Iron. The Iron had lost two games in a row, and while they were still in position to make the playoffs after the Atlanta Legends lost earlier in the day, a win against the Fleet would go a long way towards helping them potentially make the playoffs.

The Fleet had first place dreams of their own, and also needed a win to match what the San Antonio Commanders had done earlier in the game. Alas, it was not to be, as the Fleet lost 32-29 on the Iron’s last second field goal. It was a back and forth game (at least once the Fleet came back from a 12-point deficit in the third quarter), but they could not find a win. The Fleet fell to 3-3, while the Iron improved to 4-2.

Here’s how it went down:

It’s Week 6 in the Alliance!

Some questions we have entering this weekend’s action:

  • Can the Orlando Apollos be stopped? And will they clinch a playoff spot this weekend?
  • Attendance went up for the first time all season last week. Should we expect the same again?
  • Who is going to take control in the West?
  • Will any team decide that running the ball is a good way to move it? Or will we see another week dominated by passing?

With those questions and more, we’re excited for the first games of the second half of the season. Here’s a brief look at the four inter-conference matchups:

Orlando Apollos v Birmingham Iron – Game Recap

A battle for the lead of the AAF Eastern Conference kicked of Week 5 action, and it ended up going pretty much as expected. The undefeated Orlando Apollos went into Legion Field in Birmingham, took an early lead against the Birmingham Iron, and coasted to a 31-14 victory in a game that never really seemed … Read moreOrlando Apollos v Birmingham Iron – Game Recap

AAF Week 5 Schedule and Picks

It’s Week 5 in the Alliance

Some questions we have entering this weekend’s action:

  • Will the Orlando Apollos remain undefeated, or will the Birmingham Iron find a way to win and move into first place in the Eastern Conference?
  • Can the Salt Lake Stallions find their first victory on the road this season against the San Diego Fleet?
  • Will the Memphis Express and Atlanta Legends rush for more than 100 yards combined?
  • Will the winner between the San Antonio Commanders and Arizona Hotshots take over first place in the Western Conference, or will they be joined by a victorious Fleet?
  • Overall attendance has declined every week during the season. Will this trend continue? (The average attendance of the four hosts this weekend is 12,665 over six games)

We have four original matchups this weekend, and three will have a direct impact on what teams are at the top of each division at the midway point of the season. Let’s take a look at this weekend’s matchups:
