Championship Match of the Week – Leeds United v Norwich City

The Championship is back to a full weekend slate after playing a partial schedule last week because of the FA Cup. We’ve already written about the match that kicks off the weekend – a bit of a rivalry match between Preston North End and Derby County – so we turn our attention to the match that is taking place at the top of the league table.

Leeds United currently leads the Championship despite a so-so record over the past month, and they play host to second place Norwich City tomorrow in what should be one of the most exciting matches of the weekend. Though both clubs’ recent struggles has knocked them off the top of our Power Rankings, the victor in this one might make a good case for a return to the top, especially after a shocking loss by our #2 club Hull City last week.

Let’s take a look at the clubs:

Championship Match of the Week – Norwich City v Sheffield United

With a limited Championship schedule this week due to FA Cup matches, it was a shock that we will still have a match up between top clubs this week, as you would have expected the top clubs to still be active in that competition.

Norwich City, currently 2nd in the Championship, welcomes 4th place Sheffield United to Carrow Road on Saturday in what should be an exciting matchup. The Canaries shockingly lost to League One club Portsmouth in their third round FA Cup match, while the Blades lost to National League club Barnet, which helped garner the latter Small Club of the Week honors last week. While both Championship clubs probably wish to be alive in the FA Cup, their matchup this weekend will instead give them an opportunity to get ahead of some of those other top clubs that aren’t playing league matches this week.

Let’s take a look at the clubs:

Championship Match of the Week – Aston Villa v Hull City

Our Championship Match of the Week features one of the hottest clubs across English football, as well as one of the clubs that have, until recently, been a mainstay in the Premier League.

Aston Villa, currently 12th in the Championship, will host Hull City, who have ridden a wave of success up the league table into 10th place. While these clubs aren’t necessarily competing for a spot in the playoff right this moment, their recent play has been emblematic of what can sometimes occur in the Championship up and down the table. Also, though they are barely in the top half of the league table, over in our weekly Power Rankings, they both rank a bit higher, with Villa checking in at 9th and Hull City 4th.
