Birmingham Iron v San Diego Fleet – Game Recap

After winning last week in a thrilling game on a last second field goal, the San Diego Fleet were hoping to remain undefeated in San Diego with a game against the struggling Birmingham Iron. The Iron had lost two games in a row, and while they were still in position to make the playoffs after the Atlanta Legends lost earlier in the day, a win against the Fleet would go a long way towards helping them potentially make the playoffs.

The Fleet had first place dreams of their own, and also needed a win to match what the San Antonio Commanders had done earlier in the game. Alas, it was not to be, as the Fleet lost 32-29 on the Iron’s last second field goal. It was a back and forth game (at least once the Fleet came back from a 12-point deficit in the third quarter), but they could not find a win. The Fleet fell to 3-3, while the Iron improved to 4-2.

Here’s how it went down:

San Antonio Commanders v Atlanta Legends – Game Recap

It’s not often that you outgain your opponent on offense and lose by 31 points, but that’s exactly what happened in Atlanta on Sunday afternoon.

The San Antonio Commanders came into town and thrashed the Atlanta Legends 37-6, the second time this season Atlanta has lost by more than 30 points. The 10,619 fans in attendance went home disappointed, and the San Antonio Commanders return home for the first time in a month in first place.

Here’s how it went down from Georgia State Stadium:

San Antonio Commanders v Arizona Hotshots – Game Recap

In the final game of Week 5 action in the Alliance, the San Diego Commanders rushed out to a 26-0 halftime lead but needed to hold on down the stretch as the Arizona Hotshots attempted to mount a comeback.

That comeback came up a little short, with the Commanders holding on to win 29-25 in front of less than 10,000 fans at Sun Devil Stadium in Tucson. The Commanders are now tied with the San Diego Fleet at the top of the Western Conference with 3-2 records, while the Hotshots find themselves alone in third place at 2-3.

Memphis Express v Atlanta Legends – Game Recap

The Atlanta Legends were hosting their second home game of the season, and it was against fellow Eastern Conference straggler Memphis Express. Both teams managed to win their first games of the season last week, which removed the most pressing issue this week, but with both clubs trailing the red hot and undefeated Orlando Apollos (who have to be considered the favorite for the inaugural title, right?).

Over 10,000 fans were on hand at Georgia State Stadium to watch a back-and-forth game between the two worst teams in the AAF. After the barnburner in San Diego Saturday night, it was good to see the Sunday games follow suit, and the Legends came out on top 23-20, moving into sole possession of third place in the Eastern Conference (2-3), while the Express joined Salt Lake at 1-4.

Salt Lake Stallions v San Diego Fleet – Game Recap

Oh, man what a game!

You typically don’t turn the ball over FIVE TIMES – including two that were returned immediately for touchdowns – and lose a game on a last second field goal. But that’s exactly what the Salt Lake Stallions did in this one, losing to the San Diego Fleet 27-25 in front of 20,000+ at SDCCU Stadium in San Diego.

For the Stallions, this game definitely had the look of their game against the Birmingham Iron during Week 2: a first half lead in a low-scoring affair, being undone by turnovers deep in the other team’s territory, and eventually succumbing in the second half. And for the first 25 minutes of the second half, it looked like the Stallions would fail to come back yet again.
