Champions & Relegation Watch – Premier League – Version 4

The Premier League joins the Championship on an international break this week, and will resume action on 30 March. But in the meantime, we wanted to take a look at the standings… that haven’t changed much all season.

As a reminder, the top four clubs in the Premier League qualify for the Group Stage of Champions League, while the fifth place team does the same in Europa League. These competitions are great for worldwide exposure – not to mention the prize money – but it’s also for bragging rights across Europe. No English club has won the Champions League since Chelsea did so back in 2012, though we are only two seasons removed from Manchester City claiming the last English Europa League title.

Premier League – Week 26 Power Rankings

Note: This weekly publishing spot is usually reserved for our Championship Power Rankings, but with one more Championship match this week, we’ll be updating those tomorrow morning.

With the clubs of the Premier League playing twice last week, I was expecting some changes to our Power Rankings from last week. Aside from the top five clubs and Crystal Palace, that happened, with most of the rankings shuffling up a bit over the course of the week.

As always, these rankings try to only take into account the action that happens in league play, and relative placement is based on the caliber of the opponents from week-to-week and the results. If a lower club loses to a top club they aren’t punished as harshly, but the inverse may result in tumble down the rankings (if there’s room). And while the top half of the rankings nearly match the league table exactly, this won’t always be the case.

Premier League – Week 23 Power Rankings

Premier League clubs played twice last week, and with this week’s action kicking off later today, we’re releasing the update to our last batch of Power Rankings a day early. There’s a change at the top, some shuffling in the middle, and the bottom looks the same (per usual).

As always, these results try to reflect the week-to-week results, and only account for matches played in the Premier League. Most of the clubs are fairly closely aligned with their league table position, but losses to lower-ranked clubs – or wins against the higher-ranked ones – can move them dramatically out of position.

Premier League – Week 22 Power Rankings

After last weekend’s action, there is no change at the top or bottom of our weekly Premier League Power Rankings, and this is how the rankings will remain until the clubs return to league play on next Tuesday (after taking a short break for Carabao and FA Cup action).

As always, these results try to reflect the week-to-week results, and only account for matches played in the Premier League. Most of the clubs are fairly closely aligned with their league table position, but losses to lower-ranked clubs – or wins against the higher-ranked ones – can move them dramatically out of position.

Premier League – Week 21 Power Rankings

Another week in the Premier League, and another couple of points added to the gap between the Top Six and everyone else. Nevertheless, this week’s Power Rankings’ top Six is a little different than the current league table, partly because we had a club from the “Muddled Middle” win over the sixth-place club from last week’s Power Rankings. Overall, only three clubs remained in place fom last week, so there were a lot of subtle shifts up and down the rankings.

As always, these results try to reflect the week-to-week results, and only account for matches played in the Premier League. Most of the clubs are fairly closely aligned with their league table position, but losses to lower-ranked clubs – or wins against the higher-ranked ones – can move them dramatically out of position.

Premier League – Week 20 Power Rankings

Our Power Rankings updated after matches played in the New Year results in a return to the top for our former long-term top club. But for the most part, the clubs of the Premier League remain stratified in their tier structure, with the Top 6 clear of the 7th place club by at least seven points, and the last club of the”muddled middle” four points ahead of the bottom six.

As always, these results try to reflect the week-to-week results, and only account for matches played in the Premier League. Most of the clubs are fairly closely aligned with their league table position, but losses to lower-ranked clubs – or wins against the higher-ranked ones – can move them dramatically out of position.
