Championship Recap

It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost two weeks since we’ve seen meaningful football. And the two championship games we saw were probably some of the best non-Super Bowl games that we have seen in quite some time. The first had a controversial finish after a blatant penalty wasn’t called, leading to the second straight season of heartbreak for the home team. The second featured a bunch of points in the second half, and an overtime period that may cause the NFL to re-examine how it breaks ties (again).

I went 1-1 in picking winners last week, and 1-1 in picking against the spread and 0-2 on the over/unders:

NFL Playoffs

We have reached the penultimate weekend of NFL action (as long as you ignore the Pro Bowl, which I think most people do), and the final four are the top two seeds from each conference yet again – this seriously happens most of the time – so we should have just expected to be playing these games in Kansas City and New Orleans from the very beginning of this thing a few weeks ago.

I went out on a limb last week and simply picked the higher-seeded clubs, which resulted in a 4-0 record (and 7-1 for the playoffs). We’ll just ignore my picks regarding the various spreads and over/unders.

Or not. Here’s how that went:

NFL Divisional Round

NFL Playoffs I still don’t know why they don’t call this round the Conference Semifinals, but I guess that is a dumb thing to care about. After last weekend’s results, I am just picking winners this week, since I can’t seem to come anywhere near where the final scores actually end up.  Seriously, look at … Read moreNFL Divisional Round

NFL Week 16 (2018) Preview

In these weekly previews, I’ll highlight the results that I found shocking from the previous week, as well as preview the game I am most looking forward to from the weekend ahead. As we get later into the season, I may add some other sections to this, including playoff positioning and a look forward to the upcoming draft.

The Top Games From Week 15

Los Angeles Chargers 29 – Kansas City Chiefs 28
We previewed this one a bit as our Game of the Week last week, and it definitely lived up to that billing. Early, it looked like the Chiefs would come out on top and clinch the AFC West. They led 14-7 at halftime after scoring twice in the first quarter, and kept the Chargers at bay, leading by at least a touchdown until the very end. A furious fourth quarter comeback – led by MVP candidate Philip Rivers – had the Chargers with a chance to tie the game at the one yard line after a pass interference penalty in the end zone.

With four seconds left, Rivers hit Mike Williams for a touchdown, and after review, the Chargers left the offense on the field to go for two and the win. The conversion attempt was probably the easiest play of the night, and the Chargers left Kansas City tied with the Chiefs, though losing the tiebreaker for the AFC West. The Chargers will likely need to win out to win the division, while also hoping for the Chiefs to lose at least one of their remaining games (more on their game this week in a moment).
