EFL Championship – Week 18 Power Rankings

Week 17 in the Championship is in the books, and the results have led to a lot of changes from last week’s Power Rankings. We have a new club at the top – even though the former #1 didn’t lose – and a new club at the bottom to the rankings as well – even though the former bottom club is still the bottom club in the actual league table.

The action shuffled up the rankings a bit, with only seven clubs staying in the same spot from last week. Per usual, the rankings here try to represent the trends of the clubs from week-to-week, and not give them credit for early season performance that elevated them in the league table (though most clubs have mostly gone to form over the past quarter of the season).

EFL Championship – Week 15 Power Rankings

Week 14 in the Championship is in the books, and it went pretty much as expected. As such, the top six clubs remain in place from last week’s Power Rankings, and no team moved more than three spots up or down the rankings.

We are entering another week where the Championship will see each club play twice, so expect some movement in next week’s rankings, but for now, let’s take a look at how the clubs below the top six moved around this week. As always, these rankings are only based on the performance in league play.

(UPDATED) EFL Championship – Week 14 Slate

After last weekend’s international break, the Championship is back in action this weekend for your Thanksgiving (at least in the U.S.) enjoyment. A few clubs entered the break on extended hot streaks, so it was probably hard for them to sit for a week and let the momentum lapse a bit, but rest is also important in such a loaded schedule. Prior to the break, the clubs had played five matches over the course of three weeks in league play alone, with a handful of clubs playing an additional Carabao Cup match as well. Next week, everyone will be playing twice yet again, so maybe the break was for the best after all.

As always, the number in parenthesis before each team represents their current rank in our weekly Power Rankings. As the matches progress, we will update this list with results, with winning teams in bold and drawn teams in italics.

Promotion & Relegation Watch – Championship – Version 3

Note: The plan early in the season is to update these standings about every five weeks or so until much later in the season. We’ll try to highlight the important game that most impact the promotion and relegation zones in these pieces, but also take a look at how teams got to that point in … Read morePromotion & Relegation Watch – Championship – Version 3

EFL Championship – Week 13 Power Rankings

Quite a week in the Championship. A lot of the clubs towards the bottom of last week’s Power Rankings knocked off clubs near the top or middle, causing some major shuffling in the rankings this week. Only two clubs remained in the same place from last week, one of which is perpetual bottom dweller Ipswich Town. We also have a new club in as the top club, marking our sixth different club that has held the top ranking this season.

As always, the placement in our Power Rankings isn’t specifically based on table position, but is instead a combination of factors, including recent streaks. I also don’t punish a team to dramatically if they just lost a match, even to a much lower ranked club, if they had strong performance in the weeks before or they were playing on the road (for example). I also only factor performance in league play, so as exciting as it was to see Middlesbrough defeat Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup during the week, it didn’t help them (directly) in these rankings.

EFL Championship Tuesday – Aston Villa v. Norwich

The championship so far this season is a very close race, and although Aston Villa enters this match as 13th-place in the standings, there are only 7 points between 13th and 1st. A win for Aston Villa would move them up to 5th place in the table (above Norwich based on goal differential), while Norwich currently reside in 5th place.

Aston Villa finished in 4th-place last year, while Norwich finished 14th.

Guest additions by EFL Stats & Tips:
Last times out for both teams:
