EFL Championship – Week 19 Power Rankings

We’ve reached the midway point in the Championship season, and we’ll be publishing a look at the promotion and relegation races later this week. But before we do that, we wanted to update our weekly Power Rankings after last weekend’s action.

The Championship clubs will be playing twice this week, with the full league kicking off at 3:00pm GMT (10:00am EST) on Boxing Day (December 26th), so it will be a week full of football all across England. We’ll have to see if the double action leads to tired legs and abnormal results with the weekend matches as well.

As always, an individual club’s ranking doesn’t always place them near their league position, as some clubs started the season stronger than their recent play (and vice versa). An extended period of winning or losing will usually be reflected, though I tend to only look at the most recent match or two when deciding on placement.

EFL Championship – Week 15 Power Rankings

Week 14 in the Championship is in the books, and it went pretty much as expected. As such, the top six clubs remain in place from last week’s Power Rankings, and no team moved more than three spots up or down the rankings.

We are entering another week where the Championship will see each club play twice, so expect some movement in next week’s rankings, but for now, let’s take a look at how the clubs below the top six moved around this week. As always, these rankings are only based on the performance in league play.

(UPDATED) EFL Championship – Week 13 Slate

The Championship will be on an international break again next week, so this weekend’s action will be the last for most clubs until after Thanksgiving. Action will kick off on Friday night with the Steel City Derby between Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday, which pits two rivals heading in two different directions, and closed out with our Match of the Week on Saturday afternoon. It should be a thrilling week leading up to the break for sure!

As always, the number in parenthesis before each team represents their current rank in our weekly Power Rankings. As the matches progress, we will update this list with results, with winning teams in bold and drawn teams in italics.

EFL Championship – Week 13 Power Rankings

Quite a week in the Championship. A lot of the clubs towards the bottom of last week’s Power Rankings knocked off clubs near the top or middle, causing some major shuffling in the rankings this week. Only two clubs remained in the same place from last week, one of which is perpetual bottom dweller Ipswich Town. We also have a new club in as the top club, marking our sixth different club that has held the top ranking this season.

As always, the placement in our Power Rankings isn’t specifically based on table position, but is instead a combination of factors, including recent streaks. I also don’t punish a team to dramatically if they just lost a match, even to a much lower ranked club, if they had strong performance in the weeks before or they were playing on the road (for example). I also only factor performance in league play, so as exciting as it was to see Middlesbrough defeat Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup during the week, it didn’t help them (directly) in these rankings.

EFL Championship – Week 12 Power Rankings

Two games this week for the clubs across the Championship, and as a result, we’ve seen a lot of movement from last week’s Power Rankings. So much movement, in fact, that only one team stayed in the same spot in this week’s rankings.

As previously mentioned, we try to base the rankings only on matches played in the Championship. However, with four clubs playing in EFL Cup matches this week – Norwich City, Nottingham Forest, Derby County, and Middlesbrough – success there (three of the four will be playing Premier League clubs) might boost them next week a little more than what happens in league play next weekend.

EFL Championship – Week 11 Power Rankings

Lots of upsets this weekend in the Championship, with eight of our top 12 teams losing to lower ranked teams. As such, there has been a lot of movement up and down these rankings from last week, with only four teams staying put.

There will be two games this week for each team, so expect some shakeups next week as well. As a reminder, these rankings are only for league play only, though only a handful of teams are still alive in the EFL Cup anyway. Those matches resume next week for Norwich City, Nottingham Forest, Derby County and new #1 Middlesbrough.
