Atlanta Legends v Arizona Hotshots – Game Recap

Week 4 of the Alliance season started with promise and ended with a whimper, with the Atlanta Legends coming through on Sunday night and defeating the Arizona Hotshots 14-11 with their backup quarterback. Like the game that came before it on Sunday, it was a mostly ugly affair, but the Legends were able to pick up their … Read moreAtlanta Legends v Arizona Hotshots – Game Recap

San Antonio Commanders v Birmingham Iron – Game Recap

The Birmingham Iron entered Sunday afternoon’s game knowing that the Orlando Apollos had already won on Saturday, so the Iron would have to win to keep pace in the Eastern Conference. The Commanders wanted to join the San Diego Fleet at 2-2 (after the Fleet lost to the Memphis Express Saturday night) instead of joining the Salt Lake Stallions at 1-3 in the Western Conference.

The game from Birmingham, in front of a league low 6,539 fans, wasn’t terribly exciting, but the Commanders managed to knock the Iron from the ranks of the unbeaten, leaving the Apollos the lone undefeated team in the league. In a messy game, the Commanders stopped a late drive from the Iron and won 12-11 to join the Fleet at 2-2. The Iron fell to 3-1.

San Diego Fleet v Memphis Express – Game Recap

One team was leading their conference after a dominant performance to close out last week. The other was winless on the season and starting a new quarterback after a former top NFL pick proved ineffective. On paper, the game seemed pretty one-sided, with the host team likely entering next week’s game still looking for their first win on the season. But they don’t play games on paper, even in the AAF.

Early on, it seemed that the Fleet would run away with the game, but the Express were resilient and kept it close. In the end, however, the Express defense came up with a huge stop and forced a turnover, and the Express won their first game of the season 26-23 in front of 13,621 fans at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.

Orlando Apollos v Salt Lake Stallions – Game Recap

It was a cold, 35 degrees at kickoff time in the farthest north Stadium in the Alliance of American Football, Rice Eccles Stadium in Utah. Undefeated Orlando Apollos leave the confines of the warm weather coming to play the Stallions whose first two games were both road losses. They managed to grab a win last … Read moreOrlando Apollos v Salt Lake Stallions – Game Recap

Salt Lake Stallions Team Logo

We wrote about the entirety of the Week 4 schedule yesterday, but since we are a Utah-based site, and because we have adopted the Salt Lake Stallions as our Alliance team, we wanted to write a more in-depth review of the game this week against the Orlando Apollos.

This will be the second home game on the young season for the Stallions, and I imagine they are hoping for a larger turnout than last week, when only 10,641 fans made it to the game (and it looked to be a lot less in person). I’d blame it on the weather – it was in the mid-30s for most of the game – but with the Stallions winning their first game, maybe more people will be interested this week.

The game was moved from the original 2pm (local) slot to the later 6pm slot because the league wanted to feature the Apollos in prime time, but that may have also doomed them to another weather-affected game, with snow expected (80% chance) at tomorrow’s kickoff. Still, we Utahns are pretty resilient when it comes to snow, and maybe we can use the cold to our advantage against the team from the southernmost AAF city.
